Kulbroen Opens in 4 Phases
The building site is quickly developing
At long last, we will be able to enjoy the many elements and connections of the transformed Kulbroen. A transformation that has been underway for more than 11 years will now be marked by cranes and red ribbons over the next 12 months. The opening of Kulbroen will unfold in 4 phases over the coming years, with the first just months away.
Phase 1 - The Elevated Promenade - Spring 2026
Soon, you will be able to walk atop the bridge, cross Spanien above the road, and disembark Kulbroen at the red pathway at TRÆ. We will have an opening of the elevated promenade this spring - stay tuned for the exact date.
Later this year, connections from the promenade will open to the parking house named Kulhuset at the eastern end of the bridge, as well as to the two buildings north of Kulbroen, home to the hotels Moxy and Belle Guldsmeden, Lydbyen, and more organizations.
Phase 2 - Kultårnet - Autumn 2026
You can find us in Kultårnet this autumn. Kultårnet will be one of the new multifunctional elements of the transformed Kulbroen - more than the sum of its parts; not just a staircase, a café, or a project space. A vertical connector from the bridge to ground level - and a cultural anchor every day, at every level.
Phase 3 - Kulpladsen and Green Landscape - Spring 2027
In early 2027, we will fully occupy the physical space at Kulbroen when the plaza, Kulpladsen, opens, along with the green landscaping below the bridge. Then, we will embrace our outdoor presence in public view and our neighbors at all levels. Expect a grand opening to celebrate this major milestone.
Kulpladsen is an urban public plaza - holding everything from large events to everyday encounters. A robust, accessible space where energy flows, and people meet. The green corridor beneath the bridge will let nature inhabit the space and create safety and calm in this old industrial landscape.
Phase 4 - Eastern End
Aside from the connection to the parking house Kulhuset, the very eastern end of Kulbroen is still in development. It is connected to the construction of a new drop-in center - a transformation of the existing Værestedet in Jægergårdsgade. We do not yet know the opening date. In the original plans, the eastern end of Kulbroen includes a second tower and a park.
Kulbroen is owned and built by Aarhus Kommune, with consulting from Kulbroen, TRANSFORM, and others. We operate the cultural institution Kulbroen, thriving in the many elements of the space.
Many milestones are coming in the next 12 months, and we will share more details in the weeks ahead. Follow along on our social media platforms for continuous updates on the construction of the transformed Kulbroen.
